A parachute for Americans on their fiscal cliff

The hard decisions in the fiscal cliff negotiations between the GOP and Democrats would be easier if lawmakers could point to other nations that have seen the benefits of fiscal discipline in lifting an economy.

It?s a rare moment when a nation, much like a prodigal son, admits it has borrowed too much and then sets its finances in order. Americans now mostly agree their national debt is a threat to the economy. But the ?fiscal cliff? negotiations in Washington show they don?t yet see the long-term benefits of belt-tightening.

Talks between Democrats and Republicans still mainly focus on which Americans will lose and which will gain. Whose taxes will go up? Whose entitlements will be cut? The recent election didn?t make that task any easier.

One estimate, made by the International Monetary Fund, is that fixing America?s fiscal imbalance will require a one-third cut in government benefits and a one-third rise in tax revenues. The IMF should know. Its job for decades has been to force overspending nations to set their finances in order if they want its seal of approval for more foreign loans and investment.

The IMF?s tough love has worked pretty well in many nations to get them to fess up to past profligacy and then sign on to a measured pace of budget cuts, better regulations, and new revenue. Much of Latin America and parts of Asia and Africa have seen that light.

America?s current debate would benefit from the IMF?s main lesson about the future promise of fiscal discipline: A nation that takes its lumps quickly won?t regret it. Or rather, the admission of past errors and embrace of temporary sacrifice will bring out the fatted calf of economic growth.

Greece is not a model. For three years, it has been short on confessing to its fiscal deceit and long on clinging to government excess. Nor is Argentina, which has largely defied the IMF and creditors, resulting in rampant inflation and crumbling infrastructure.

The best current model is Latvia, a Baltic state that has rediscovered the virtues of thrift and done well by it.

During the 2008-09 economic crisis, the former Soviet state of 2 million people nearly defaulted on its debt. But it then made wrenching sacrifices ? cutting government jobs, spreading the tax base, reducing welfare. The result is that Latvia now has the highest growth in the European Union. It has restored its credibility with financial markets.

?Latvia decided to bite the bullet, and instead of spreading the pain over a number of years, it decided to go hard and go quickly,? said IMF chief Christine Lagarde. She calls its policies ?a tour de force.?

Ms. Lagarde says the debate about whether to emphasize austerity or growth is a false one. A nation can do both.

As they take up sacred cows like Medicare, Social Security, and the mortgage interest deduction, the GOP and Democrats should cite the experiences of other nations that have bitten the bullet.

Sacrifices may not seem like suffering if Americans know a country can thrive again by standing on the rock of fiscal discipline.

(AP) ? An Army private charged with leaking classified material to WikiLeaks said Friday that he tied a bedsheet into a noose while considering suicide during his pretrial confinement in Kuwait.

Pfc. Bradley Manning testified on the fourth day of a pretrial hearing at Fort Meade near Baltimore. Manning testified under cross-examination that he made the noose in Kuwait before he was moved to a Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va. He claims that his treatment later at Quantico was so harsh that the charges against him should be dismissed.

He arrived at Quantico classified as a suicide risk. Eight days later, he was upgraded to the less-restrictive "prevention of injury" status.

Manning maintains that neither designation was appropriate because he didn't feel like hurting himself after leaving Kuwait.

Under questioning by prosecutor Maj. Ashden Fein, Manning said that upon arrival at Quantico in July 2010, he was told he would be processed into the brig as a suicide risk. He said he noted on his intake form that he had considered suicide.

He also wrote on the form that he was "always planning and never acting" upon suicidal thoughts.

In January 2011, after complaining about his custody classification, Manning met with a board of officers that made custody status recommendations. He said when he was asked about the statement on his intake form about planning and never acting, he told the board that he might have lied.

"I did say it might have been a sarcastic answer," Manning said. "I told them today, the end of January 2011, I'm not suicidal. I'm not trying to harm myself or anything like that."

The testimony marked the first time military prosecutors went face-to-face with Manning.

He spoke publicly Thursday for the first time since his May 2010 arrest, saying he got so used to leg irons and being locked up 23 hours a day that when he was finally transferred to medium-security confinement at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., in April 2011, he felt uneasy moving freely around the cell block.

"There was the sense of, 'OK, I know they're going to put the hammer down on me soon,'" Manning said near the end of his five hours on the witness stand.

Besides being classified "maximum custody," Manning was subjected to additional restraints during his nine months at Quantico. Commanders maintained the extra restrictions despite repeated recommendations by brig psychiatrists that they be eased. They included scratchy, suicide-prevention bedding and sometimes having all his clothing, eyeglasses and reading material removed from his cell.

The military contends the treatment was proper.

At one point during his testimony Thursday, Manning donned a dark-green, suicide-prevention smock resembling an oversized tank top made of stiff, thick fabric. He said it was similar to one he was issued in March 2011, several days after Quantico jailers started requiring him to surrender all his clothing and eyeglasses each night as a suicide-prevention measure. This occurred after he told them ? out of frustration, he said ? that if he really wanted to hurt himself, he could have done so with his underwear waistband or flip-flops.

The 5-foot-3 soldier looked youthful in his dark-blue dress uniform, close-cropped hair and rimless eyeglasses. He was animated, often speaking in emphatic bursts, swiveling in the witness chair and gesturing with his hands.

Also Thursday, the military judge, Army Col. Denise Lind, accepted the terms under which Manning may plead guilty to eight of the 22 charges he faces. Coombs revealed the plea offer in early November, saying it would enable Manning to take responsibility for sending U.S. secrets to WikiLeaks.

Lind hasn't formally accepted the pleas but has indicated she will consider them at a hearing starting Dec. 10.

Under the offer, Manning would plead guilty to certain charges as violations of military regulations rather than as violations of federal espionage and computer security laws. The offenses would then carry maximum prison terms totaling 16 years rather than 72.

The pleas would include admissions that Manning sent WikiLeaks classified memos, Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, Guantanamo Bay prison records and a 2007 video clip of a U.S. helicopter crew gunning down 11 men later found to have included a Reuters news photographer and his driver. The video, titled "Collateral Murder" on WikiLeaks, garnered worldwide attention. The Pentagon concluded the troops acted appropriately during the attack, having mistaken the camera equipment for weapons.

The government could still prosecute Manning for all 22 counts he faces, including aiding the enemy. That offense carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Manning is accused of engineering the biggest leak of classified material in U.S. history. Besides the video, he is charged with sending hundreds of thousands of classified Iraq and Afghanistan war logs and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

Texas Millionaire Known For His ?Cadillac Ranch? Charged With ...

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) ? Stanley Marsh 3, the eccentric millionaire artist best known for his ?Cadillac Ranch? art display along an interstate in the Texas Panhandle, was charged Wednesday with 11 felony counts of molesting children.

The 74-year-old turned himself in at a county jail after an arrest warrant was issued, accusing him of molesting two teenagers in 2010. His arrest follows the filing of several lawsuits against him for allegedly paying 10 teens for sex acts.

The charges could go before a grand jury in the next few weeks or soon after the first of the year, special prosecutor Matt Powell said.

?This is the beginning of the process,? Powell said. ?This is what we felt like we needed to do.?

According to criminal complaints filed in Potter County, Marsh had the teens engage in sexual acts, including masturbation and oral sex, on three days in 2010. He was charged with six counts of child sexual assault and five counts of sexual performance by a child.

Marsh?s criminal attorneys, Paul Nugent and Heather Peterson of Houston, denied the charges, saying in a statement that the teens in the civil cases waited until Marsh suffered a massive stroke last year to move forward with a plan ?to become multimillionaires? by signing with a Houston personal injury attorney.

?The investigation into the group?s claims is far from complete,? the attorneys wrote in their statement. ?There should be no premature rush to judgment. Stanley Marsh 3 is not guilty of the group?s allegations, and will fight as vigorously as his declining health permits.?

The six lawsuits claim Marsh paid the boys, ages 15 and 16, for sexual acts. One claimed that Marsh provided him drugs and alcohol, bought him two cars, and paid him at several points during a year in sums of as much as $10,000.

Marsh?s civil attorney, Kelly Utsinger, has denied those allegations. He did not immediately return a call seeking comment on Wednesday?s criminal complaints.

The teens? Houston-based civil attorney, Anthony Buzbee, said two of the teens went to police in late summer before the lawsuits were filed, but two others didn?t speak with investigators until early November ? about the time Marsh?s offices were searched. One teen?s mother sought out a civil attorney when she didn?t hear back from police, according to the lawsuits.

Marsh is probably best known for planting 10 brightly painted Cadillacs nose down along Interstate 40 in the Panhandle in the 1970s. The cars, ranging from a 1948 club coupe to a 1963 sedan and gathered from junkyards, private collectors and used car lots, have since become a pop art landmark.

Visitors through the years have splattered them with graffiti and in 2005 they were coated in pink to honor breast cancer victims, survivors and their families. Marsh also has painted them black and yellow to honor the passing of longtime friends.

An Amarillo native and philanthropist, Marsh and his wife have donated to local art and education causes. After he suffered the massive stroke and a series of smaller ones, his wife was appointed his guardian.

Marsh was indicted on charges of indecency with a child in 1996, but the charges were eventually dismissed. That same year Marsh acknowledged no wrongdoing in a settlement with a youth who claimed Marsh sexually abused him.

In 2001, parties in four lawsuits that alleged imprisonment, sexual misconduct and harassment of teens were settled. Marsh apologized but no other details were made public.

Fake Windows 8 Key Generators Surface

Because of its promise of improved feature and security, Windows 8 is naturally making waves in the tech industry and among ardent Windows users. Unfortunately, we are all too aware of the pitfalls of popularity when it comes to online security. It?s just a matter of time before cybercriminals will take advantage of Windows 8?s popularity.

We got hold of two samples that are packaged as key generator apps for Windows 8, which are available on http://{BLOCKED}en2eqqh2.cloudfront.net. Key generators are used to generate serial numbers and are typically used to for bootleg copies of a paid software. Based on our analysis, the apps we?ve found are malicious. Trend Micro detects these as ADW_SOLIMBA and JOKE_ARCHSMS respectively.

When executed, ADW_SOLIMBA displays a fake message informing users to click ?OK? to download Windows 8 via the web browser. On the other hand, JOKE_ARCHSMS purports as a Windows 8 activator. Similar to ADW_SOLIMBA, JOKE_ARCHSMS also displays images to trick users into thinking that they can activate Windows once they have sent an SMS to a certain number. In addition, it also connects to the following URLs for click fraud:

The people behind these malware are hoping to ride on Windows 8?s popularity and some user?s eagerness to try out the software. And so far, using new programs, software, or apps as a social engineering lure has been an effective vehicle for attacks. Remember the malicious Instagram apps that surfaced just as news of Facebook?s acquisition of the app broke out? Similarly, malicious versions of Bad Piggies, Angry Birds Space were also uncovered in time for these apps? release.

Cybercriminals and other bad guys on the Internet know what users want and they?ll use it to their advantage. Users can never be too careful about what to download and from what sites. These samples may not be the only malicious key generators tools available on the Internet. For security purposes, users must avoid visiting or downloading from untrusted sources. Better yet, users should instead purchase the legitimate program.

Trend Micro Smart Protection Network? protects users from this threat by detecting and deleting these malicious keygen apps. It also blocks access to the related site.

Video: Embracing data 'noise' brings Greenland's complex ice melt into focus

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

An enhanced approach to capturing changes on the Earth's surface via satellite could provide a more accurate account of how ice sheets, river basins and other geographic areas are changing as a result of natural and human factors. In a first application, the technique revealed sharper-than-ever details about Greenland's massive ice sheet, including that the rate at which it is melting might be accelerating more slowly than predicted.

Princeton University researchers developed a mathematical framework and a computer code to accurately capture ground-level conditions collected on particular geographic regions by the GRACE satellites (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment), according to a report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. A joint project of NASA and the German Aerospace Center, GRACE measures gravity to depict how mass such as ice or water is distributed over the Earth's surface. A change in GRACE data can signify a change in mass, such as a receding glacier.

Typically, GRACE data are recorded for the whole globe and processed to remove large regional differences, said lead author Christopher Harig, a postdoctoral research associate in Princeton's Department of Geosciences. The result is a coarse image that can provide a general sense of mass change, but not details such as various mass fluctuations within an area.

Princeton University researchers developed an enhanced approach to capturing changes on the Earth's surface via satellite that could provide a more accurate account of how geographic areas change as a result of natural and human factors. In a first application, the technique brought the complexities of Greenland's massive ice sheet into clearer focus. From 2003 to 2012, the ice sheet experienced patchy fluctuations in ice loss and gain, while the areas of greatest melt gradually migrated from the southeast to the northwest coast.Credit: Video by Christopher Harig

With their method, Harig and co-author Frederik Simons, an assistant professor of geosciences, can clean up data "noise" ? the signal variations and distortions that can obscure satellite readings ? and then recover the finer surface details hidden within. From this, they can configure regional information into a high-resolution map that depicts the specific areas where mass change is happening and to what degree.

"We try to do very little processing to the data and stay closer to the real signal," Simons said. "GRACE data contain a lot of signals and a lot of noise. Our technique learns enough about the noise to effectively recover the signal, and at much finer spatial scales than was possible before. We can 'see through' the noise and recover the 'true' geophysical information contained in these data. We can now revisit GRACE data related to areas such as river basins and irrigation and soil moisture, not just ice sheets."

The researchers tested their method on GRACE data for Greenland recorded from 2003 to 2010 and brought the complexities of the island's glaciers into clearer focus. While overall ice loss on Greenland consistently increased between 2003 and 2010, Harig and Simons found that it was in fact very patchy from region to region.

In addition, the enhanced detail of where and how much ice melted allowed the researchers to estimate that the annual acceleration in ice loss is much lower than previous research has suggested, roughly increasing by 8 billion tons every year. Previous estimates were as high as 30 billion tons more per year.

Douglas MacAyeal, a geophysical sciences professor at the University of Chicago, said that the research provides a standardized and accurate method for translating GRACE data, particularly for ice sheets. The sprawling, incomplete nature of the satellite's information has spawned a myriad of approaches to interpreting it, some unique to specific scientists, he said.

"GRACE data is notoriously noisy and spatially spread out, and this has resulted in 'ad hoc' methods for processing mass changes of Earth's ice sheets that have wildly different values," said MacAyeal, who is familiar with the Princeton work but had no role in it.

"In other words, each particular investigator ends up getting a different individual number for the net change in mass," he said. "What this research does is figure out a way to be more thoughtful and purposeful about exactly how to deal with GRACE's notorieties. This method would allow researchers to standardize a bit more and also to understand more precisely where they are, and where they are not, able to resolve ice changes."

Simons compared the noise that previously obscured a precise view of Greenland's glaciers to fog on a window. For a small area such as Greenland, the GRACE signal can be easily overwhelmed by noise, which has numerous causes such as the satellite's orbital position or even the type of mathematics researchers use to interpret data, Simons said.

"Other researchers used less than perfect tools to wipe off the window more or less indiscriminately and quite literally left streaks on the data. They were thus less able to put the continent into the proper focus," he said.

"We effectively modeled then removed noise to get the ice-loss signal out of the data," Simons said. "We then recovered relatively tiny variations in ice mass that to others might have looked like noise, but that to us were shown to be signal."

The Princeton researchers found that Greenland lost roughly 200 billion tons of ice each year during the seven-year period studied, which falls within the range reported by other studies. The amount of ice lost annually could stack up on all of Manhattan to nearly 12,000 feet, or more than eight times taller than the Empire State Building, Harig said.

As expected, ice loss occurred in the lower, warmer coastal areas ? as opposed to the higher and colder interior, which gained ice mass ? but the melt was concentrated on the southeast and northwest coasts for most of the period studied. Indeed, many coastal areas showed no ice-mass loss, while the ice sheet on the southwest coast actually thickened slightly from 2003 to 2006.

But these trends were more complex when Harig and Simons got into the details. Surprisingly, the location of the greatest melt activity migrated around the island, shifting from the southeast to the northwest coast in just a few years. Ice loss on the southeast coast built up starting in 2003 and hit a highpoint in 2007. In 2008, loss on this coast began to recede and shift toward the northwest coast; by 2010, the southeast coast displayed only minor ice loss, while nearly the entire western coast exhibited the most severe melt. During this transition, melt also receded then picked up again on the northeastern coast with seemingly little overlap with activity elsewhere.

Details such as these can help scientists better understand the interplay between Greenland's glaciers and factors that influence melt such as ocean temperature, daily sunshine and cloud coverage, Harig said. That understanding can in turn help researchers determine how the Greenland ice sheet responds to climate change ? and how much more ice loss to expect. At current melt rates, the Greenland ice sheet would take about 13,000 years to melt completely, which would result in a global sea-level rise of more than 21 feet (6.5 meters), Harig said.

"Scientists are not totally sure what the driving force of the melt on Greenland is on short, yearly timescales," Harig said. "There is no certainty about which outside factor is the most important or if all of them contribute. Being able to compare what is happening regionally to field observations from other researchers of what a glacier is doing helps us figure out what is causing all this melt."

Michael Oppenheimer, Princeton's Albert G. Milbank Professor of Geosciences and International Affairs, said that the new level of detail Harig and Simons provide on Greenland's glaciers not only gives insight into what is causing the glaciers to melt, but what could possibly happen if they do.

Unlike water in a bathtub, sea-level rise is not uniform, said Oppenheimer, who is familiar with the research but had no role in it. Higher waters in certain locations may depend on which part of an ice sheet melts, he said. And determining which part of an ice sheet is melting the most requires precise details of ice loss and gain for specific glaciers ? details that have largely been unavailable, Oppenheimer said.

"Nobody has really been able to take a look at an individual ice sheet and determine the influence that ice loss from different parts of that ice sheet could have on sea levels," Oppenheimer said.

"The details matter. Being able to pinpoint where and how much ice gain and loss there is tells you something about the driving forces behind it, and therefore how much we can expect in the future," he said. "A synoptic view at a high resolution is what GRACE always promised, and now this research has helped realize that potential. It's time to finally milk the data for as much detail as possible."

Harig is adapting the computer code ? which is available online ? to study GRACE data on ice loss in Antarctica and water accumulation in the Amazon River basin.

The paper, "Mapping Greenland's mass loss in space and time," was published online Nov. 19 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Six new non-Euro cardinals mean real change in the Church

Pope Benedict XVI said he wanted his Nov. 24 consistory, the fifth of his papacy, to express the universality of Catholicism. His choice of six new cardinals from every continent except Europe was designed to convey, as he put it Saturday, that the church belongs "to all the peoples" and expresses itself "in the various cultures of the different continents."

If my experience at Rome's Urban College yesterday is any indication, you can consider the point made.

Over the years I've covered seven consistories, the events in which a pope creates new cardinals. As part of the experience, I've also attended scores of post-consistory receptions, both the ones staged by the Vatican inside the Apostolic Palace (the only time that the doors of the place are flung open to the general public), and ones hosted by other parties ? diplomatic embassies, Catholic organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, and so on.

By any standard, the reception my wife and I witnessed on Sunday afternoon was not your typical Roman affair. It featured not one but three different African dance and vocal troupes, a buffet with classic African dishes such as tuwo shinkafa (a thick rice pudding served with spicy soup), and the new cardinal himself sashaying to the head table as drums pounded and Ibo singers serenaded his arrival.

The guest of honor was Cardinal John Onaiyekan of Abuja, Nigeria, one of six new cardinals elevated over the weekend. Aside from American Cardinal James Harvey, the longtime prefect of the papal household, the other five came from outside the West. In addition to Onaiyekan, they were:

  • Patriarch Boutros Ra? of the Maronite Church in Lebanon.
  • Cardinal Cleemis Thottunkal, Major Archbishop (and "Catholicos") of the Syro-Malankara Church in India.
  • Cardinal Rub?n Salazar G?mez of Bogot?, Colombia.
  • Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila in the Philippines.

One bit of proof that this consistory belonged to the whole world, and not just the West, is that the Lebanese contingent celebrating?Ra?'s red hat included a delegation from Hezbollah, which is seen in the West as a terrorist group but which functions in Lebanon as a political party and mainstream social movement.

Each consistory tends to have its rock star cardinal, the one guy who towers over the others in terms of media appeal, the size of the crowds he draws, and so on. This time the rock star was probably Tagle, mostly because he's seen as "the great Asian hope," meaning the most credible contender from his part of the world to become pope someday.

The 55-year-old Tagle is the real deal, a genuine intellectual with a popular touch, and perhaps the best natural communicator among the Asian bishops. During the recent synod on evangelization, he won both hearts and minds by arguing for a humbler, simpler church with a greater capacity for silence.

Yet each of the new cardinals illustrates the staggering universality of the church, and Onaiyekan is a good case in point. Not only is he a reminder that Africa is still under-represented in the College of Cardinals relative to its Catholic population, but Onaiyekan's biography also reflects the unique social role church leaders often play on the most intensely religious continent on the planet.

Heisman hopeful Manziel happy to talk to media

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) ? The legend of Johnny Football has grown all season while Johnny Manziel piled up yards and the Texas A&M Aggies piled up wins.

On Monday, the freshman quarterback finally weighed in on his catchy nickname as he spoke to the media for the first time all season.

"I think a lot of people here in Aggieland enjoy it," he said. "But I find it extremely funny."

The success of Manziel and the Aggies is no joke. His 4,600 yards of total offense have helped No. 10 A&M to its first 10-win season since 1998, and has him among the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy.

Manziel said he respected coach Kevin Sumlin's decision for him not to speak to the media this season because he's a freshman. But says he's happy to have a chance to talk about this season.

"It's kind of nice now to be able to kind of let you guys know how I am a little bit more," he said. "There's so many question marks out there."

Sumlin, who is in his first year at A&M after four seasons at Houston, raved about Manziel and said he was a catalyst for what his team was able to do in its first season in the Southeastern Conference.

"He's a tremendous competitor and a tremendous leader, and that's something that you really don't see in a player as a redshirt freshman," Sumlin said. "His leadership on and off the field throughout the season has made our season a real successful one."

Manziel has thrown for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns and ran for 1,181 yards and 19 more scores in a regular-season the Aggies capped with five straight wins including an upset of then top-ranked Alabama. He is second in the nation in total offense and broke Cam Newton's SEC record for total offense in a season on Saturday.

The quarterback is a bit surprised at how well Texas A&M did in its transition from the Big 12.

"I don't think I ever really envisioned how big this season would be for us," he said. "I don't really think anybody envisioned that we would win 10 games at the beginning of this season and that we would all have so much success as a team."

The celebrity status has been shocking to Manziel, who will turn 20 two days before the Dec. 8 Heisman announcement. He's still surprised when people approach him at restaurants and other places around College Station to ask for photos and autographs, even though it's become a daily occurrence.

"I'm a small-town kid," he said. "I come from Kerrville, Texas and I still see myself that way. I don't see myself as Johnny Football, I still see myself as Jonathan Manziel, a small town guy from Kerrville who is extremely fortunate and extremely blessed to be able to play football here at A&M."

He seemed amused by the attention given to some online photos of him at a Halloween party dressed as Scooby Doo alongside some beautiful and scantily-clad young women.

"That Halloween night was something where a lot of guys on the team dressed up and kind of just wanted to get away from all the seriousness and the grind that is college football season and go out and be kids again and dress up and just have fun," he said, without specifically addressing the pictures.

Manziel said winning the Heisman is something he dreamed about as a child, but that he hasn't spent a lot of time worrying about it or any other awards. No freshman has ever won the award given to college football's most outstanding player.

"I feel like that situation will play itself out, and whatever's meant to be will happen," he said. "I'm just doing whatever coach Sumlin and them ask me to do ... so we can take care of things in a bowl game."

But Manziel did admit that when he was younger he'd play college football video games and build a quarterback that would win the award as a freshman. Funny thing is, the players he made rarely resembled his 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame.

"When I created a video game player I probably made him 6-6, probably 230 pounds," he said. "I definitely didn't make him my size. But I've played so many video games maybe a few times I did. But typically I would have made him look something like Cam Newton."

Newton was the last SEC winner of the Heisman, picking it up in 2010. If Manziel comes away with the award, maybe somewhere in a small Texas town like the one he grew up in, a young boy will build a football player on his video game that does look like the A&M star.

Manziel has trouble grasping the whirlwind this season has been for him, and considers himself lucky to have had the opportunity to be in the position he's in now.

"This season has been incredibly surreal," he said. "It's beyond my wildest imagination. It's a true testament to how this team has grown every week, because without these guys none of my individual success would be anything."

Shrubs lend insight into a glacier's past

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? The stems of shrubs have given researchers a window into a glacier's past, potentially allowing them to more accurately assess how they're set to change in the future.

Their findings have been published 27 November in IOP Publishing's journal Environmental Research Letters, and show how a glacier's history of melting can be extended way past the instrumental record.

Much like the rings on a tree stump indicate how old it is, measuring the width of rings on the stem of a shrub can give a good indication of how well it has grown year on year. Under extreme environmental conditions, such as those close to a glacier, a shrub's growth relies heavily on summer temperatures, meaning the ring-width of a shrub can be used a proxy for glacial melting, which also relies heavily on summer temperatures.

Lead author of the study, Allan Buras, said: "In warm summers, shrubs grow more compared to cold summers. In contrast, a glacier's summer mass balance is more negative in warm summers, meaning there is more melting compared to cold summers.

"Big rings in shrubs therefore indicate comparably warm summers, and thus a strongly negative summer mass balance -- in other words, more melting."

The researchers, from the University of Greifswald, tested this theory on a local icecap in the Scandic Mountains of southern Norway. They took 24 samples of shrubs from a site close to the glacier and analysed their ring-widths.

Monthly precipitation and temperature data from a local climate station were retrieved from the Norwegian Meteorological Office, and the summer mass balance of the glacier, from 1963 to 2010, was retrieved from the existing literature.

Each of these data sets was then statistically tested to see if there was a correlation between them. The results showed a robust and reliable correlation between the ring-width of shrubs and the summer melting of the glacier.

"Our results show that it is possible to reconstruct glacier summer mass balance with shrub ring-width series and it is therefore theoretically possible to extent records of summer mass balance into the past," Buras continued.

The shrubs that were collected in the study were relatively young, only allowing for reliable reconstructions over the past 36 years, meaning they could not be used to extend the record of the glacier; however, the researchers are confident that this could have been achieved if longer-lived shrubs were selected.

Most of the available data on the mass balance of glaciers only spans several decades and there is some data missing, mainly because most glaciers are situated in hard-to-reach arctic and alpine areas.

With the possibility to extend the instrumental records of summer mass balance, researchers may gain a better understanding of how glaciers behave in the summer, which they can use to calibrate and verify their existing models.

Groupon Board Members Talking About Forcing ... - Business Insider

Andrew Mason's tenure as CEO of Groupon may be coming to a close.

Kara Swisher at All Things D reports, "several board members of Groupon have been seriously discussing making major leadership changes at the Chicago-based daily deals company, including bringing in a more experienced CEO to take over for co-founder Andrew Mason."

Groupon's shares have totally collapsed since the company went public.

The board is meeting this week, and management changes will be discussed, says Swisher. The board is frustrated with Mason's performance. She says that Groupon cofounder Eric Lefkofsky wants Mason to be more public, and more aggressive talking about the company's turnaround.

Swisher does hedge her report quite a bit with this, "To be clear, a move of replacing him is not likely to happen immediately, or at all."

We'll have Mason at our IGNITION conference tomorrow, so we'll find what Mason thinks of this news.

What's Dolph Waiting For?

For a Superstar who fancies himself WWE?s resident Showoff, Dolph Ziggler certainly has been shy about cashing in his Money in the Bank contract. The self-proclaimed ?Boast Master General? earned the coveted contract at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view more than four months ago. During that time, the World Heavyweight Championship has been in the sizable hands of Sheamus and, more recently, Big Show, each of whom has appeared vulnerable to a cash-in effort while holding the title. All of which begs the question: What exactly is Ziggler waiting for?

For starters, Ziggler probably has a good memory. He remembers well his epic battles with The Celtic Warrior and the resilience he displayed. He knows that even when Sheamus is down, he?s rarely ever out. And the last thing Ziggler wants is to repeat John Cena?s unprecedented failure to capitalize after cashing in, which Cena did on Raw?s 1,000th episode. Ziggler may be smarmy, but he?s also smart.

As for the current World Heavyweight Champion, Big Show was severely hamstrung at Survivor Series when, after defeating Sheamus in a title match, the Irishman mercilessly pummeled The World?s Largest Athlete with a steel chair. As Big Show lied helplessly on the entrance ramp, why did Ziggler not run out to ringside, briefcase in hand, and summon a referee to start the match? Again, Ziggler is no fool. He knew full well it would have been near impossible for him to maneuver an uncooperative 441-pound frame into the ring. If Big Show ever finds himself lying unconscious on the canvas, though, chances are Ziggler will pounce. (PHOTOS: BIG SHOW VS. SHEAMUS)

Physical limitations aside, could The Showoff simply be too distracted by the "AJ Scandal"? After all, over the past several weeks, Ziggler has embroiled himself in controversy, antagonizing AJ Lee and getting into scrapes with Cena, her alleged paramour. With his former manager, Vickie Guerrero, continuing to stir the pot, it?s unlikely Ziggler will untangle himself from the scandal any time soon ? perhaps much to the detriment of his title aspirations. (WATCH: AJ ATTACKS DOLPH)

Whatever Ziggler?s motivation, the world will continue to watch and to speculate. And perhaps that?s all the flashy Superstar wants: more attention. But even Ziggler has to know the surest avenue to attention is capturing the World Heavyweight Championship.?

Real Estate Companies Focus On the Greenest Side of Green ...

An article posted to the website of National Real Estate Investor noted that 5 real estate companies were included in Newsweek magazine?s Green Rankings (total: 500 companies) for 2012 ? including Vornado Realty Trust at #87 and CBRE Group at #96.

In 2011, Vornado was #177; CBRE was #128. See the NREI article here.

Of course, companies that own a lot of buildings (as does Vornado) or operate/manage them for clients (which is CBRE?s business) would seem to be prime candidates for attention from electrical contractors.

But consider this spin on what?s really important, from the article:

?As a property owner, our focus on sustainability and energy efficiency is centered around lowering our operating expenses while improving our operating practices,? says Sukanya Paciorek, Vornado?s New York-based vice president, corporate sustainability.

?Since 2007, the company has successfully LEED-certified over 30 million sq. ft. of its portfolio and has implemented some of the most innovative energy and data management programs in the U.S.?

Paciorek cites examples including a 6.2-MW co-generation plant in New York and a 980-kW solar system in New Jersey as ?highlights of our forward-looking approach to technology and efficiency.?

LEED involves many criteria but, from what?s above, the ELECTRICAL aspects of projects seem to get a relatively stronger weighting. This can?t be bad for contractors hoping to help customers on a range of energy-efficient measures that help lower customer operating expenses.

Additionally, the article quoted David Pogue, sustainability director of CBRE Group. He was the keynote speaker at NECA?s 2012 Energy Forum.

Addendum: An article in the May issue of TED presented the perspective of Chris Studney, now VP for energy & sustainability for yet another real estate firm, Jones Lang LaSalle. The kicker: Studney spent the first 13 years of his career, up to April 2011, working for electrical distributors. He is, then, an electrical industry veteran ? who?s now sitting on the other side of the table.

Why did Chris Brown delete his Twitter account? | WTVR.com ...

(CNN) ? Chris Brown has deleted his Twitter account after getting into a vulgar war of words with comedian and writer Jenny Johnson on Sunday.

The stomach-churning exchange of messages all began with Brown tweeting, ?I look old as f***! I?m only 23,? and Johnson responding, ?I know! Being a worthless piece of s*** can really age a person.?

The back-and-forth between Brown and Johnson, some of which can be seen on Johnson?s still-public feed, continued for at least half-an-hour. Brown bit back at Johnson?s initial reply with: ?take them teeth out when u Sucking my d*** HOE.? Johnson lobbed back: ?It?s ?HO? not ?HOE? you ignorant f***.?

From there, Brown made a lewd comment about farting, to which Johnson replied, ?Your mom must be so proud of you.? She also posted a link to a 2009 MTV News story containing details of Brown?s assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna, along with the hashtag, ?#SuckIt.?

After another round of scatological chatter, both Johnson and Brown seemed to give in.

?Okay. I?m done. All I got from that exchange with Chris Brown is that he wants to s*** and fart on me,? Johnson wrote, later adding, ?I have zero respect for a person who seems unapologetic for the terrible crime he committed and shows no signs of changing.?

Before shutting down his Twitter account, Brown told his fans, ?To teambreezy? Know that I?m not upset. Just felt like entertaining the ignorance. These b*****s crazy.. Further proved my point of how immature society is. #CarpeDiem. Catch me in traffic??

Since the Twitter spat, Johnson has reported receiving threatening messages.

?It?s alarming how many death threats I?m receiving via replies,? she tweeted Monday. ?I encourage everyone, including Twitter to look through them. Not cool.?

Brown, meanwhile, had encouraged Johnson to ?Just ask Rihanna if she mad??????,? which wouldn?t appear to be the case. The pair, who announced their renewed friendship in October and have collaborated together on a song for Rihanna?s new album, ?Unapologetic,? were reportedly spotted in Berlin over the Thanksgiving holiday.

(AP) ? Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi struck an uncompromising stand Monday over his seizure of near absolute powers, refusing in a meeting with top judicial authorities to rescind a package of constitutional amendments that placed his edicts above oversight by the courts.

Morsi's supporters, meanwhile, canceled a massive rally planned for Tuesday to compete with a demonstration by his opponents, citing the need to "defuse tension" at a time when anger over the president's moves is mounting, according to a spokesman for the president's Muslim Brotherhood.

The opposition rally was going ahead as scheduled at Cairo's Tahrir square, birthplace of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak's regime nearly two years ago.

The meeting between Morsi and members of the Supreme Judiciary Council was a bid to resolve a four-day crisis that has plunged the country into a new round of turmoil, with clashes between the two sides that have left one protester dead and hundreds wounded.

Morsi, according to a presidential statement, told the judges that while the constitutional declaration he announced Thursday grants him immunity from any oversight, he intended to restrict that to what it described as "sovereignty issues."

The vaguely worded statement did not define those issues, but they were widely interpreted to cover declaration of war, imposition of martial law, breaking diplomatic relations with a foreign nation or dismissing a Cabinet.

The statement did not touch on the protection from oversight Morsi has extended to two bodies dominated by his Brotherhood and other Islamists: The 100-member panel tasked with drafting a new constitution and parliament's mostly toothless lower chamber, or the Shura council.

The Shura Council does not have lawmaking authorities but, in the absence of the more powerful lower chamber, the People's Assembly, it is the only popularly elected body where the Brotherhood and other Islamists have a majority. The People's Assembly was dissolved by a court ruling in June.

The judiciary has pushed back, calling the decrees a power grab and an "assault" on the branch's independence. Judges and prosecutors stayed away from many courts in Cairo and elsewhere on Sunday and Monday.

A spokesman, Yasser Ali, said Morsi told the judges that he acted within his rights as the nation's sole source of legislation, assuring them that the decrees were temporary and did not in any way infringe on the judiciary.

Two prominent rights lawyers ? Gamal Eid and Ahmed Ragheb ? dismissed Ali's remarks.

Eid said they were designed to keep "Morsi above the law," while Ragheb said they amounted to "playing with words."

"This is not what Egyptians are objecting to and protesting about," Ragheb said. "If the president wanted to resolve the crisis, there should be an amendment to his constitutional declaration."

In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke Monday by telephone with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr to "register American concerns about Egypt's political situation," according to spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

Clinton stressed that the U.S. wanted to "see the constitutional process move forward in a way that does not overly concentrate power in one set of hands, that ensures that rule of law, checks and balances, protection of the rights of all groups in Egypt are upheld," Nuland said.

Morsi's aides have repeatedly emphasized that the president has no intention of amending his decrees, meaning the near absolute powers they give him will stand. Morsi also issued a law to "protect the revolution" that rights activists maintain is effectively a declaration of emergency laws designed to combat poorly defined threats to the nation or to public order.

Opposition activists have denounced Morsi's decrees as a blatant power grab, and refused to enter a dialogue with the president before the edicts are rescinded.

Morsi says he wants to retain the new powers until the new constitution is adopted in a nationwide referendum and parliamentary elections are held, a time line that stretches to the middle of next year.

Many members of the judiciary were appointed under Mubarak, drawing allegations, even by some of Morsi's critics, that they are trying to perpetuate the regime's corrupt practices. But opponents are angry that the decrees leave Morsi without any check on his power.

Morsi, who became Egypt's first freely elected president in June, was quoted by Ali as telling his prime minister and security chiefs earlier Monday that his decrees were designed to "end the transitional period as soon as possible."

The dispute is the latest crisis to roil the Arab world's most populous nation, which has faced mass protests, a rise in crime and economic woes since the initial euphoria following the popular uprising that ousted Mubarak after nearly 30 years of autocratic rule.

Morsi's decrees were motivated in part by a court ruling in June that dissolved parliament's more powerful lower chamber, the People's Assembly, which was dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood and ultraconservative Islamists.

The verdict meant that legislative authority first fell in the hands of the then-ruling military, but Morsi grabbed it in August after he ordered the retirement of the army's two top generals.

Morsi's decrees saved the constitutional panel and the upper chamber from a fate similar to that of the People's Assembly because several courts looking into the legal basis of their creation were scheduled to issue verdicts to disband them.

Secular and Christian politicians have withdrawn from the 100-seat panel tasked with drafting the charter to protest what they call the hijacking of the process by Morsi's Islamist allies. They fear the Islamists will produce a draft that infringes on the rights of liberals, women and the minority Christians.

The dispute over the decrees has taken a toll on the nation's already ailing economy. Egypt's benchmark stock index dropped more than 9.5 percentage points on Sunday, the first day of trading since Morsi's announcement. It fell again Monday during early trading but recovered to close up 2.6 percentage points.

It has also played out in street protests across the country.

Thousands gathered in Damanhoor for the funeral procession of 15-year-old Islam Abdel-Maksoud, who was killed Sunday when a group of anti-Morsi protesters tried to storm the local offices of the political arm of the Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political group.

The Health Ministry said 444 people have been wounded nationwide, including 49 who remain hospitalized, since the clashes erupted on Friday, according to a statement carried by the official news agency MENA.

Morsi's office said that he had ordered the country's top prosecutor to investigate the teenager's death, along with that of another young man shot in Cairo last week during demonstrations to mark the anniversary of deadly protests last year that called for an end to the then-ruling military.

Up to 10,000 people marched through Tahrir Square for the funeral procession of 16-year-old Gaber Salah, who died Sunday of head wounds suffered in clashes with police. Salah was a member of April 6, one of the key rights groups behind the anti-Mubarak uprising, and a founder of a Facebook group called "Against the Muslim Brotherhood."

Trail of Steel ? 1441 AD, Marcos Mateu-Mestre - Lines and Colors

Trail of Steel - 1441 A.D., Marcos Mateu-Mestre
The link between movies and comics is a strong one. Even without the obvious bridge of their wonderful merging in animation, they share numerous qualities.

Both are visual storytelling mediums, and share a common concern with establishing shots, close-ups, framing a scene, conveying the spatial relationship of characters one to the other and other elements of essential visual continuity from scene to scene.

Both involve the element of time and of visual compositions that change over time.

Both have a ?director?s? viewpoint, and the impact of choices of lighting, contrast and visual mood cannot be understated in the effectiveness with which a story is told.

Storyboards, which are used to plan movies, television and animation, are in essence a from of comics.

It?s not surprising then that there is crossover between the two fields; a number of comics artists and writers have moved into the fields of film and television and visual development artists have ventured into comics.

Marcos Mateu-Mestre, who I have profiled previously, has moved back and forth ? he started as a comics artist for newspapers in his native Spain, moved into production design for animation and is currently a visual development artist working at Dreamworks.

In his excellent book, Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers, which I reviewed here, he applied his expertise in both fields to create a superb framework for narrative illustration.

In his new book, Trail of Steel ? 1441 A.D., Mateu-Mestre places those skills in the service of a graphic story about mercenary soldiers in 15th century Spain. The artist provided me with a review copy.

The storytelling, as you would expect, is dramatically cinematic, conveyed in Mateu-Mestre?s wonderfully fluid drawing style. He has an uncanny ability to combine precision draftsmanship and free, energetic rendering. I?ve spoken before about the delight I take in his drawing style.

The real highlight for me, however, is his mastery of tone. To say that the drawings are in black and white and grays is to miss the point. Here is a story told in both subtle and dramatic value contrasts that would not have been as effective if rendered any other way.

Mateu-Mestre uses value here in much the way skilled film directors use black and white film in many classic movies, creating a mood and atmosphere that would actually be difficult to achieve in color. These are images in which color would be a distraction and actually lessen the impact.

He has posted some images from the book on his blog in which he plays with the application of subtle colors to some of the pages (images above, second from bottom). As much as I like them as images and interesting experiments, I much prefer the panels as presented in the book.

Even though this is a story, students of comics (and visual storytelling in general) could consider Trail of Steel effective as a continuation of the lessons in Framed Ink ? a textbook use of cinematic comics storytelling and the application of light and dark in narrative illustration.

The book is appended with a few notes on process, preliminary drawings and thumbnail page layouts. It is available as both a European style hardcover album (the best format for comics, IMHO) and a trade paperback.

You can find more mentions of the book on Mateu-Mestre?s blog, along with more of his visual development work, including some beautiful tone and color images from his work on Puss In Boots.

(AP) ? Bella Swan, James Bond and Abe Lincoln have combined to lift Hollywood to record Thanksgiving revenue at the box office.

Kristen Stewart's finale as Bella in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 2" was No. 1 again with $64 million during the five-day holiday stretch that began Wednesday, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Daniel Craig's Bond adventure "Skyfall" came in at No. 2 with $51 million, while Daniel Day-Lewis and Steven Spielberg's Civil War saga "Lincoln" finished third with $34.1 million.

According to box-office tracker Hollywood.com, the three films paced Hollywood to an all-time Thanksgiving week best of about $290 million from Wednesday to Sunday.

That tops the previous record of $273 million over Thanksgiving in 2009, when "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" led the weekend.

This Thanksgiving also was a huge 25 percent jump from a year ago, when domestic revenues were a weak $232 million as some big holiday releases fizzled.

With a strong December lineup ahead, Hollywood has resumed its record revenue pace for the year after a brief box-office lull in late summer and early fall.

Domestic revenues for 2012 are at $9.75 billion, putting Hollywood potentially on track for its first $11 billion year, which would beat the 2009 record of $10.6 billion, said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

"We're barreling toward a record-breaking box-office year," Dergarabedian said. "It's built on the back of just a lot of really strong movies that have come out over the past few weekends. It bodes very well for the rest of the holidays."

The "Twilight" finale, "Skyfall" and "Lincoln" finished in the same top-three rankings for the second-straight weekend as new releases were unable to dislodge the holdovers.

Released by Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment banner, "Breaking Dawn ? Part 2," pulled in $43.1 million from Friday to Sunday, raising its domestic total to $227 million. The movie added $97.4 million overseas to bring its international total to $350.8 million and its worldwide take to $577.7 million.

Sony's "Skyfall" also topped $200 million domestically, ringing up $36 million for the three-day weekend to put its U.S. total at $221.7 million. With $41.3 million more overseas, "Skyfall" raised its international revenues to $568.4 million and its worldwide sales to $790.1 million.

"Lincoln," a DreamWorks film distributed by Disney, took in $25 million over the weekend to lift its domestic revenue to $62.2 million.

Leading the newcomers was Paramount and DreamWorks Animation's tale "Rise of the Guardians" at No. 4 with $24 million for the weekend and $32.6 million since opening Wednesday.

Based on William Joyce's "Guardians of Childhood" books, "Rise of the Guardians" gathers Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and other mythical beings as a team of heroes battling an evil overlord.

Close behind at No. 5 was director Ang Lee's shipwreck saga "Life of Pi" at No. 5 with $22 million over the weekend. The 20th Century Fox release has taken in $30.2 million domestically since its Wednesday debut and added $17.5 million in four Asian markets.

"Life of Pi" was adapted from Yann Martel's best-selling novel about an Indian youth adrift on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. Many fans considered the introspective novel impossible to film, but Lee has charmed audiences and critics with an inspiring survival story told through dazzling 3-D images.

The weekend's other new wide release, a remake of the 1980s U.S.-invasion tale "Red Dawn," opened at No. 7 with $14.6 million, raising its total to $22 million since debuting Wednesday.

"Red Dawn" sat on the shelf for three years while studio backer MGM went through bankruptcy, with distributor FilmDistrict eventually picking it up for domestic release. The movie's cast includes Chris Hemsworth ("Thor") and Josh Hutcherson ("The Hunger Games") in a story of young guerrillas battling North Korean invaders.

In limited release, Fox Searchlight's "Hitchcock" opened solidly with about $300,000 in 17 theaters. The movie stars Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock in a behind-the-scenes story of the making of "Psycho."

The weekend's overall strength came from a broad range of films that clicked with various audiences, from action and family fare to thoughtful drama.

"This is a marketplace that has something for everyone," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for 20th Century Fox. "You have something deeper like 'Life of Pi,' yet you have a very successful sequel in 'Twilight' at the same time. Adult bio-drama, if you will, in 'Lincoln,' and you have Bond. That's the secret to a very successful and balanced marketplace."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 2," $43.1 million ($97.4 million international).
