It won't be made publicly official until Monday, but multiple reports, including this one from CSNPhilly.com, say Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has already informed Andy Reid that he will not return to coach the team for a 15th season. ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Lurie has not yet had that conversation with Reid but is expected to have it Monday and make an official announcement soon thereafter. And the Eagles are officially denying reports that Reid has been informed of his status.

But we're likely dealing with semantics here about what's official and what's not. Clear signs abound that Reid knew Sunday's 42-7 loss to the New York Giants was his last game as Eagles coach. He had his family with him at the game, which is not his usual practice for road games. And earlier on Sunday, Schefter reported that Reid is trying to put together a coaching staff to have in place if and when he gets offered another head coaching job somewhere else next year. If the Eagles don't have a news conference Monday to announce Reid's firing, it would be a huge surprise.

Reid's 4-12 record this season was his worst as Eagles coach -- one game worse than the 5-11 he put up in his first year in Philadelphia. He finishes with a record of 233-140 (counting playoffs), seven division titles, one NFC championship and nine winning seasons, including six in which the Eagles won at least 11 games. He is unquestionably the best coach the franchise has ever had, though his 12-20 record over his final two seasons will dim his legacy and his failure to win a Super Bowl title is what doomed him in the eyes of Eagles fans.

Where do the Eagles go now? Don't expect a replacement to be announced in the next couple of days. Oregon coach Chip Kelly is thought to be among the candidates, but he's coaching the Ducks in the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday and likely won't interview until after that game. The Eagles would be allowed this week to interview assistant coaches on other NFL teams whose seasons are over or who have bye weeks -- think Denver's Mike McCoy or Atlanta's Dirk Koetter -- but only Lurie knows the short list for sure. The head coaching decision is the likely the first and most significant decision facing the Eagles in what will be an offseason of transition.

A few months back, while I was writing my duck cookbook, I reached out to a few purveyors so I could get my hands on some quality domestic geese. One of them, the Schiltz Goose Farm in South Dakota, sent me some smoked goose. I told them I didn?t really need any pre-made products, but they insisted. ?Just try it,? Jim Schiltz told me. ?I think you will really like it.?

Holy crap was it good! I mean, really good. I mean, roll-your-eyes-back-in-your-head good. There was a creamy layer of smoky fat on top, then perfectly cooked, perfectly pink meat. Sliced thin, the fat melted on your tongue. It was insanely good, and I wanted more. But Schiltz holds his recipe for smoked goose close, so I was going to have to reverse engineer the recipe. A tall order.

I was at a loss until I read a throwaway line in an old book on German food, The Cooking of Germany?by Time-Life Books. It is a very difficult to find book these days, but it is worth every penny if you are really into German cuisine. In its pages is a reference to something called spickgans, a style of smoked goose breast from Pomerania, on Germany?s Baltic coast.

Spickgans is, apparently, a point of pride in this region?s cookery. It is a domestic goose breast, cured and smoked over a combination of juniper boughs, beech, alder or oak, and peat moss. Like a lot of regional specialties, each household?s version is slightly different.

Interestingly, this style of smoked goose has always been a cut above regular smoked goose. A menu from New York City?s Metropole Hotel and Golden Rod Rathskeller from November 1900 shows both Pomeranian smoked goose, selling for $0.70, and regular smoked goose, selling for only $0.20 an order. Adjusted for inflation, that means an order of Pomeranian smoked goose would set you back a hefty $18.62 today. In 1906 over at Stauch?s on Coney Island, you could get an order of Pomeranian smoked goose with asparagus and hollandaise sauce for the equivalent of $18.50 in today?s dollars.

A contemporary book written by Elizabeth van Arnim, ?Elizabeth and Her Garden,? contains an amusing reference to how revered spickgans was in Germany:

?A man must be made comfortable before he will make love to you and though it is true that if you offered him a choice between Spickgans and kisses he would say he would take both yet he would invariably begin with the Spickgans and allow the kisses to wait.?

Clearly this is no ordinary cold cut. But was?this the origin of Jim Schiltz?s smoked goose? At that point, I didn?t care. I just had to make spickgans.

Fortunately, I had one more domestic goose on hand, this one sent to me by my friend Ariane Daguin, doyen of D?Artagnan Fine Foods. I broke the bird down and used the legs to make prosciuttina d?oca, an Italian cured goose preparation; more on that in another post. That left me with some badass goose breasts. Whoever supplies Ariane with her geese knows what the hell they?re doing. Look at the marbling in the meat of this bird:

I?ve never seen anything like it. Pretty amazing stuff, considering that waterfowl are not known to accumulate intramuscular fat they way beef does. Reading further about spickgans, I learned that one of the keys to this smoked goose is to truss the breast or stuff it into sausage netting. This keeps the meat compact and results in an almost salami-like cylinder of goosey goodness that is far easier to slice than a typical smoked goose breast. A brilliant idea that I am, frankly, sorta angry at myself for having not thought of it earlier.

So I cured my goose, stuffed it into the netting and smoked it over alder wood for seven hours. It smelled wonderful. I sliced into it and was immediately taken back to that smoked goose that Jim Schiltz had sent me: The seasonings were a little different, but the smokiness of the meat as well as that melt-in-your-mouth texture were identical.

If you have a smoker, I urge you to try this. If not, this might be reason enough to buy one. Of all the charcuterie recipes I have on this site, this is right up there at the top. It is relevatory. I promise.

German Smoked Goose Breast

To make this correctly, you will need to do a few things you might not normally do:

You need to truss your goose breast or stuff it into sausage netting, which you can buy online. While not absolutely necessary, it does change the end result in a subtle way.
You will definitely need to use nitrites (Instacure No. 1) for safety and to get that pink color.
The safety factor comes in with another thing you need to do to make this recipe ? you need to start the goose in a cold smoker and bring the heat up to temperature very slowly. This is easy to do in a Bradley smoker, and it can be done in a Camp Chef smoke vault or in many other smokers. It is, however, very hard to do with a classic smoker; the kind where you start a fire near the meat.

Flavorwise, you are getting a lot of character from juniper berries, black pepper and Scotch. What?s with the Scotch? Well, unless you have some means of smoking over peat, the best way to get a little of that peaty flavor into the meat is to soak it overnight in a peaty Scotch. I used Laphroaig. Can you skip this step? Sure, but if you a) like to drink peaty Scotch and b) have it around, by all means use it.

I made this with domestic goose breast, but there is no reason you can?t do it with skin-on breasts of Canada or whitefront geese. You could also use a big, domestic Moulard duck breast, too. Don?t try it with skinny or small birds.

Makes 2 goose breasts.

Prep Time: 3 days, curing time

Cook Time: 7 hours of smoking time

Skin-on breasts from 1 large goose, about 2 pounds
44 grams of kosher salt, about 4 tablespoons
3 grams of Instacure No. 1, about 1/2 teaspoon
25 grams sugar, about 2 tablespoons
4 grams crushed juniper, about 1 tablespoon
10 grams freshly ground black pepper, about 1 tablespoon
1/2 cup peaty Scotch whisky (optional)

?If you are using the Scotch, put the goose breasts in a bowl and coat them with the whisky. Put them into a closed container just about large enough to hold them and refrigerate overnight.
The next day, mix all the remaining ingredients in a bowl. Drain the goose breasts, or just pat them dry if you have not done the Scotch soak. Massage the spice mixture into the meat, making sure every bit of the goose is covered. Put the goose breasts into a closed container that just barely fits the meat. Pour in any excess salt/spice mixture, cover and refrigerate for 3 to 4 days. Every day during the curing process, turn the goose breasts over so they are evenly coated.
When the meat has cured, it will be dark red and slightly firm to the touch throughout. Rinse it off briefly under cold running water and pat it dry. Let the meat sit out in a cool place for 2 to 4 hours, preferably with some sort of breeze or fan on it. Or you can leave it to dry in the fridge uncovered overnight.
Truss the meat as you would a roast, or stuff it into sausage netting. If you do the netting, wear an apron, as you will need to manhandle the goose breast into the netting. Take your time and do it little by little. Tie off the ends of the string or netting, leaving enough at the end with the most fat ? this should be the thick end of the breast ? to hang. You want the fattiest part of the goose breast at the top, so the fat can drip down and keep the meat moist.
Hang the breasts in a cold smoker and smoke over beech, alder, oak or cherry wood. Apple is a good substitute, too. Start the smoke cold and gradually bring the temperature up. Your goal is to have the thickest part of the goose breast reach 140?F to?150?F by the end of cooking. Move the goose breasts out of the smoker and allow to return to room temperature before refrigerating.
The smoked goose will last 10 days in the fridge, or a year if well sealed and frozen.

Initially the first tweet caused waves of interest from news outlets, but when Shakira herself failed to also tweet the good news -- and Pique went silent for the next 11 hours with no follow up -- it appeared that the news might be a bit premature. His most recent post, actually noting the "prank" day, seems to confirm that he was just joking.

Still, a baby is definitely on the way; the couple, who met while?Shakira was filming a video for the South Africa World Cup, announced via Facebook in September that they were expecting a child.

"Gerard and I are very happy awaiting the arrival of our first baby," said the 35-year-old singer and new mentor on "The Voice." "At this time, we have decided to give priority to this unique moment in our lives and postpone all the promotional activities planned over the next few days."

Looks like they'll have to extend those postponements a little longer.

They are different formulations to meet the demands of differences in brake systems. Only one of them is recommended for your sedan.

Transmission fluid is the same thing. For decades there were two basic types of tranny fluid used at Eads Automotive & Tire Center Inc.: friction modified or not. With the tremendous engineering advances in sedan automatic transmissions, there have been several new types of fluids developed to protect and lubricate them.

Nowhere are the advances in automotive fluids more evident to Jacksonville motorists and Eads Automotive & Tire Center Inc. professionals than in motor oil. Many new weights and formulations have been created to meet the demands of today?s modern sedan engine design. Modern engines have more parts and much tighter tolerances. Every year, engines make more power and get better fuel economy. And with all the complication and sophistication, they still have to be durable.

That?s where the new grades of engine oil come in. They have to be formulated to lubricate, protect and clean all of those sedan engine parts, big and little. The oil has to be thin enough to get into little passages, yet resistant to vaporization.

So far, the DADT repeal has simply meant that US troops no longer face being forced out of the military for their sexual orientation.

But for the partners of gay troops, the impact of the repeal has been less sweeping and more ambiguous.

Even when gay couples are legally married under state law, for example, Section 3 of DOMA forbids the US government from treating such military couples as married.

And so they are not eligible for the kinds of benefits that heterosexual married couples receive in the military, including housing, medical care, and in the case of Morgan and others, survivor benefits should they die while serving their country.

DOMA Section 3 is the specific measure that will be reviewed by the Supreme Court in March.

Passed by Congress in 1996, the law declares that the word ?marriage? means only a legal union between one man and one woman and that the word ?spouse? refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is also a husband or wife.

As a result, under federal law, the benefits of marriage can go only to a person of the opposite sex, regardless of state law.

DOMA Section 3 has been declared unconstitutional by eight federal courts.

The Obama administration said last year that it would enforce the law, but would no longer defend it in court.

Should DOMA Section 3 be struck down by the Supreme Court, ?My sense is that same-sex couples who are married under state law would be treated exactly the same as married couples are for the purposes of treatment on military installations and for benefits,? says Robert Tuttle, a law professor at George Washington University.

Currently, there is an ?exhaustive list? of benefits that same-sex spouses do not receive, says Zeke Stokes, spokesman for OutServe-Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, an advocacy organization in Washington.

While enlisted soldiers are permitted to live off base if they are married, unmarried soldiers are often required to live in barracks on base.

Yet in some cases where gay service members are married under state law, they have ?been forced to live on base, while their husband or wife has to live off base,? Mr. Stokes says. ?And so they have to incur the cost of two households in these situations, so there are some real financial hardships associated with it.?

In addition to not being eligible for housing allowances and government medical insurance, same-sex military couples often find a litany of ?daily indignities? the most difficult, Stokes says.

Opposite-sex spouses of troops, for example, are allowed to shop at the base grocery store, known as the commissary. Same-sex spouses often cannot, though base commanders sometimes make exceptions to this rule.

Stokes recalls a same-sex spouse who had permission from base command to shop at the commissary, but only to buy items for the child she had with her partner.

When she went to pay for the groceries, the cashier made her justify each item and why it was specifically for her child. ?Those sorts of things can sometimes be as psychologically damaging as not having health care,? he says. ?Because it?s so publicly humiliating.?

Morgan recalls a similar incident. After the cancer diagnosis, she and her wife, Karen Morgan, were on a ?bucket list? trip to Hawaii with their daughter, Casey.

They went to the commissary to buy some food, but Morgan's wife was not permitted to enter because, as a same-sex spouse, she is not entitled to a base ID card under DOMA.

?I had my ID card, and Casey had hers, but Karen was told she couldn?t go in. Karen does all the shopping for our family, and Casey was asking, ?Mama, why can?t Mommy come?? ? Morgan says.

?It was embarrassing ? plus, as the caretaker in our family, Karen is the one who knows what we like to eat, not me.?

Nor is her wife entitled to Tricare military medical insurance, an expense that costs the family an additional $700 a month, Morgan says. ?We cannot afford that,? she says.

Upon her death, she adds, her daughter, Casey, will get survivor life insurance and what the military calls a death gratuity, in addition to Social Security benefits.

While an opposite-sex spouse would also be eligible for these benefits, Karen is not. ?I earned these benefits serving my country,? says Morgan, who has been in a civil union with her wife since 2000, and married to her since 2011, after DADT was repealed. ?It?s the same fears anyone has for their family: I just want them to be taken care of.?

The Supreme Court?s decision to take up DOMA fills her with hope. ?I?m very excited that they took up the legislation,? Morgan says. ?It makes me very proud.?

In the meantime, Morgan has been invited to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the Jan. 3 inauguration of the new governor of New Hampshire, Maggie Hassan.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Americans bought new homes last month at the fastest pace in more than two and a half years, adding to other recent evidence that the housing market is steadily recovering.

The Commerce Department says that sales of new homes rose 4.4 percent in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 377,000. That's the strongest pace since April 2010, when a homebuyer's tax credit boosted sales.

New home sales have increased 15.3 percent in the past year. Still, the improvement comes from depressed levels. Sales remain below the 700,000 that economists consider healthy.

Rising sales have kept the supply of available homes low, which pushes up prices. Only 149,000 new homes were for sale at the end of last month, just above a record low of 143,000 in August. More on AOL Real Estate:

ALMATY (Reuters) - A military transport plane crashed in southern Kazakhstan on Tuesday, killing all 27 people on board, including the commander of the Central Asian nation's border guards, local media and the KNB security service said.

The twin-engine Antonov An-72 jet disappeared from radar screens at about 1900 local time (1300 GMT) as it was making a descent near the city of Shymkent, the capital of the South Kazakhstan Region.

Kazakhstan's Channel 7 television showed early footage of charred and mangled fragments of the airplane scattered around a cordoned off area in a raging blizzard.

Kazakhstan's KNB security service said the plane, bound for Shymkent from the capital Astana, belonged to its border troops.

The commander of the country's border guards, Turganbek Stambekov, was among those on board, it said on its site (www.knb.kz). The plane was carrying a crew of seven as well as 20 servicemen.

The passengers also included senior border guard officers from southern Kazakhstan. The border guards had been due to make a stopover in Shymkent and then fly to the Uzbek capital Tashkent for talks with Uzbek colleagues, local media said.

The plane plunged to the ground in bad weather from an altitude of about 800 meters as it was making a fourth circle, trying to land, Kazakh television channels said.

KTK channel broadcast footage of an eyewitness saying he had heard a loud explosion and had seen flames at the crash site.

Quoting Kazakh air traffic controllers, Channel 7 said the plane had crashed into an open-cast mine some 21 km (13 miles) from Shymkent, and rescue teams could not immediately reach the crash site.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Forecasts of blinding snow, sleet and freezing rain threatened to complicate Christmas Day travel around the nation's midsection Tuesday as several Gulf Coast states braced for a chance of twisters, high winds and powerful thunderstorms.

A blizzard watch was posted for parts of Indiana and western Kentucky for storms expected to unfold Tuesday amid predictions of up to 4 to 7 inches of snow in coming hours. Much of Oklahoma and Arkansas braced under a winter storm warning of an early mix of rain and sleet forecast to eventually turn to snow.

Some mountainous areas of Arkansas' Ozark Mountains could get up to 10 inches of snow amid warnings travel could become "very hazardous or impossible" in the northern tier of the state from near whiteout conditions, the National Weather Service said.

After dawn Tuesday, the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety said bridges, overpasses and highways in several counties were already becoming slick and hazardous. Also, Kathleen O'Shea with Oklahoma Gas and Electric said the utility was tracking the storm system to see where repair crews might be needed among nearly 800,000 customers in Oklahoma and western Arkansas.

Elsewhere, areas of east Texas and Louisiana braced for possible thunderstorms as forecasters eyed a developing storm front expected to spread across the Gulf Coast to the Florida Panhandle, raising the threat of any tornadoes.

Quarter-sized hail reported early Tuesday in western Louisiana was expected to be just the start of a severe weather threat on the Gulf Coast, said meteorologist Mike Efferson at the weather service office in Slidell, La. He told The Associated Press by phone on Tuesday that Lake Charles, La., was placed under a tornado warning and a tornado watch was in effect over a wider area of southeast and south-central Louisiana until 2 p.m. EST.

Storms expected during the day Tuesday along the Gulf Coast could bring strong tornadoes or winds up to 70 mph, heavy rain, more large hail and dangerous lightning in Louisiana and Mississippi, Efferson said.

"We have a strong upper level system moving through the area," he said, adding the combination of warm moist air colliding with a cold front could also produce damaging straight-line winds on the Gulf Coast. "The real threats are going to be damaging winds and storms."

In Mississippi, Gov. Phil Bryant urged residents to be alert.

"Please plan now for how you will receive a severe weather warning, and know where you will go when it is issued. It only takes a few minutes, and it will help everyone have a safe Christmas," Bryant said.

Ten storm systems in the last 50 years have spawned at least one Christmastime tornado with winds of 113 mph or more in the South, said Chris Vaccaro, a National Weather Service spokesman in Washington, via email.

The most lethal were the storms of Dec. 24-26, 1982, when 29 tornadoes in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi killed three people and injured 32; and those of Dec. 24-25, 1964, when two people were killed and about 30 people injured by 14 tornadoes in seven states.

In Alabama, the director of the Emergency Management Agency, Art Faulkner, said he has briefed both local officials and Gov. Robert Bentley on plans for dealing with a possible outbreak of storms.

No day is good for severe weather, but Faulkner said Christmas adds extra challenges because people are visiting unfamiliar areas and often thinking more of snow than possible twisters.

"We are trying to get the word out through our media partners and through social media that people need to be prepared," Faulkner said

During the night, flog blanketed highways at times in the Southeast, including arteries in Atlanta where motorists slowed as a precaution. Fog advisories were posted from Alabama through the Carolinas into southwestern Virginia.

Several communities in Louisiana went ahead with the annual Christmas Eve lighting more than 100 towering log teepees for annual bonfires to welcome Pere Noel along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. That decision came after fire chiefs and local officials decided to go ahead with the tradition after an afternoon conference call with the National Weather Service.

In California, after a brief reprieve across the northern half of the state on Monday, wet weather was expected to make another appearance on Christmas Day. Flooding and snarled holiday traffic were expected in Southern California.

HIGH POINT, N.C. ? A Piedmont family is homeless for the holidays.?

Clint and Kimberly Clark were at the movies Sunday night with friends, while the couple?s two young kids were at their High Point home with a babysitter.?

Around 10:30 a fire broke out in a bedroom.?

?I was terrified.? I?ve never been more scared in my life, the second I walked around that corner and saw that smoke my heart started racing.? I panicked,? says Leia Kirk, the 21-year-old babysitter.

Kirk was able to get the two kids out of the house safely.

Within minutes Clint and Kimberly arrived.?

?You don?t really know what you have until it?s gone,? says Kimberly Clark, who lost her home in a fire.?

The family lost everything inside.?

Steve Snyder has known the Clarks for about five years.?

He was at the movies with the couple and was with them when they saw their home.?

?You look at burnt Christmas gifts, no kids should honestly wake up without opening a gift,? says Steve Snyder, a friend of the Clarks.

Snyder wrote a Facebook post asking the community to help the Clarks.?

?This is what Christmas is all about.? It?s not what you?re receiving; it?s the spirit of helping others,? says Snyder.?

A Facebook post, a few clicks and some shares brought out the Christmas spirit from friends and even strangers.

People have brought over piles of clothes for Clint, Kimberly, and their two kids.?

Some people who don?t even know the Clarks brought over bags of games and toys for the two kids.?

The Clarks aren?t able to spend Christmas in their own home and they?re staying with friends until they figure out what?s next.

?You always ask yourself why things like this happen to good people?? asks Clint Clark.?

The Clark family believes the reason is a reminder that even bad things can become blessings. ?It will make this time of year even more meaningful to look back,? says Kimberly Clark.

Many Americans, and investors around the world, are watching anxiously this week to see what the U.S. Congress will do (or not do) to save the U.S. economy and taxpayers from the ?fiscal cliff?. If new legislation is not enacted by December 31, 2012, taxes for all Americans will automatically increase. The Congressional Budget Office has already estimated that this will lead to another recession in 2013.

That would mean a 20 percent capital gains rate, and a dividend rate at income tax levels, which could revert to the Clinton-era 39.6 percent for the highest earners. The Affordable Care Act in 2013 adds 3.8 percent to those rates for the wealthiest Americans.

As you may know, your U.S. retirement account (IRA, 401k, etc.) can fund an Israeli investment account and keep the funds tax-deferred. But sometimes, it is wiser to take out your funds and pay the taxes now, while the tax rates are relatively low, instead of waiting until next year when the tax rates may be higher.
