March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon and/or rectum; it is among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United States. For both men and women, it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the country. The risk of developing the cancer increases with age, thus, the majority of cases (over 90%) occur in individuals over 50 years of age.
While it is among the most common types of cancer in Americans, colorectal cancer is also one of the most easily preventable. It is estimated that as many as 60% of related deaths could be avoided if all men and women over the age of 50 were screened routinely. Individuals with inflammatory bowel disease or those with close relatives diagnosed with colorectal cancer may need earlier, and more frequent, screening. Most cases of the cancer are caused by precancerous polyps which are easily removed during the screening process.
There is some evidence to show that maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle may reduce an individual?s risk. Currently research is geared towards studying the role of vitamins and supplements in preventing colorectal cancer. Through early detection, individuals everywhere can put a stop to this devastating cancer.
